How to respond to cyberharassment at the first signs?

It often all starts with a simple message: an inappropriate remark, insistence, then another, which becomes more frequent, more aggressive, harder to ignore. That is often how cyberharassment begins, and these behaviours should never be downplayed, never ignored.

This capsule details four reflexes to adopt at the first signs: don’t respond to provocation, because harassers are looking for a reaction and replying can make things worse; keep the evidence, with screenshots of abusive messages, profiles and comments and their dates; block without waiting, because blocking is not running away but protecting yourself; and report the content on the platform, because every report counts.

Cyberharassment can escalate quickly, and acting early prevents the situation from getting worse. But there is something just as essential as these reflexes: not staying alone. You did nothing to deserve this violence, the responsibility always lies with the abuser. Responding at the first signs means taking back control and protecting your well-being, your safety, your mental health.
